JONATHAN T. D. NEIL
Creative strategist and leader with 25 years of experience in startups, higher education, media, editorial, and artist services.
Currently I’m an advisor to the fractional auction platform AShareX and a board member of Defy Ventures, a national nonprofit that teaches entrepreneurship and career readiness in prisons and post-release programs. I write a Substack called Consecutive Matters and co-host The M.O. Podcast with Joey Flores. You can view the archive of my writing here.
From 2021 to 2024 I was Co-Founder of Inversion Art, a Y-Combinator-inspired accelerator and investment program designed to give visual artists the means and methods to pursue their most ambitious work. Prior to Inversion, I was an Associate Provost at Claremont Graduate University and the Founding Director of Sotheby’s Institute of Art’s Los Angeles campus and partnership with Claremont. I also serve as an Editor-At-Large for The Brooklyn Rail (NY) and for many years was on the editorial masthead of ArtReview magazine (UK).
Current Advising and Board Work
AShareX is the world’s first auction platform that allows fractional bids to compete against single-bidders for high-value assets such as art, collectibles and real estate. Real-time factionalized bidding increases the number of bidders, creating true asset-price discovery and democratizing ownership. All sales are performed according to SEC and FINRA regulations.
Defy Ventures prepares the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated to make the best of a second change. Defy’s “Entrepreneurs-in-Training” use entrepreneurship as a means to develop their sense of self-worth, future promise, and job readiness. More than 7,900+ EITs have served in Defy's programs and their recidivism rates are less than half of the national one-year average.
